How to renew your med card in New Jersey

NJ medical cannabis cards are valid for two years. Patients must be reevaluated by a qualified doctor to be eligible for renewal. However, you do not have to visit the same doctor’s office or see the same practitioner you saw for your last evaluation. It’s a good idea to be reevaluated by your NJ-certified doctor and start renewing your card several weeks before the expiration date to ensure there’s no gap in coverage.

Thankfully, the process for how to renew your New Jersey medical cannabis card isn’t complicated. And NuggMD makes the process even easier!

  • We’ll send you an email reminder when it’s time to renew.
  • Sign in to NuggMD to meet with one of our state-certified medical practitioners.
  • Follow the provided steps to complete your med card renewal with the state.

Whether you got your initial recommendation with NuggMD or another local doctor’s office or service near you in New Jersey, our medical marijuana doctors are standing by.

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in New Jersey

Like most states, New Jersey allows adult cannabis patients to designate caregivers to assist them in obtaining and administering their medicine. Minor patients are required to designate a caregiver. Usually, this is a parent or guardian who is registered along with the patient. In cases where the patient is physically unable to make it to an alternative treatment center (ATC), they may designate two caregivers.

NJ allows patients to designate caregivers when they initially register for the medical cannabis program or add them after their registration. Minor patients under 18 years of age must designate a caregiver over 21 in order to register. The state requires caregivers who aren’t immediate relatives of the patient to submit to a criminal background check.

In order to qualify as a caregiver in New Jersey, an individual must:

  • Be a permanent NJ resident
  • Be over 18 years old
  • Pass a criminal background check (for non-immediate family members)

Caregivers must pay a $10 registration fee. There is no fee for the parents or guardians of minor patients.

Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

  • Qualifying NJ residents must first be diagnosed with one of the debilitating medical conditions that are listed by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. All patients must be evaluated by a state-licensed physician and be at least 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian. Qualifying patients also must have a New Jersey residency.

    • Seizure disorders, including epilepsy
    • Terminal Illness Requiring End-Of-Life Care
    • Tourette Syndrome
  • The list of debilitating medical conditions is maintained by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC). According to the latest revision to the state’s medical cannabis law, the NJ CRC can add to the list of qualifying conditions. If your condition isn’t listed, your best course of action is to petition the NJ CRC to add it to the list.

  • New Jersey medical cannabis patients have access to both medical and recreational dispensaries and are given priority at dispensaries with both medical and recreational sales. The medical menus at dispensaries that sell to both medical and recreational users tend to be larger.

The purchase limit for medical patients is also higher in New Jersey. Recreational users can purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis at a time, while medical users can purchase up to 3 ounces.

NJ has also done away with taxes on medical cannabis, so medical patients will save on tax compared to adult-use consumers (which can really help in a state with some of the highest cannabis prices in the nation).

  • It only costs $149 to get a New Jersey medical cannabis evaluation with NuggMD, and there’s no risk because patients who don’t qualify for the program will get their evaluation for free! After receiving their recommendation, medical cannabis patients can get a digital state registration card for free, or a physical card for $10.

  • Nearly all insurance companies will not cover the cost of medical cannabis because it’s federally illegal. This may change in the near future. New Jersey (A 3511/S 309) would require insurance and worker’s compensation coverage for medical cannabis under many circumstances. Both bills are pending in committee.

  • If approved, your physician’s recommendation will be submitted within 24 to 48 hours, sometimes sooner. It can take up to three weeks for your application to be processed by the state and your medical cannabis card to be mailed. That said, applications usually take 7-10 business days to process.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before your certification has been submitted to the state. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • Yes! You can see any New Jersey state-licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice nurse participating in the state’s medical cannabis program to get your medical marijuana renewal evaluation. All NuggMD practitioners are licensed in the state for which they provide evaluations and have acquired all state-required cannabis training and certifications.
