Qualifying conditions in Louisiana
Louisiana doesn’t have a set list of qualifying conditions. Instead, the decision is up to the doctor. A doctor may recommend cannabis for any condition that they consider to be debilitating.
The state has also listed the following qualifying conditions
- Cancer.
- Glaucoma.
- Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
- Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
- Cachexia or wasting syndrome.
- Seizure disorders.
- Epilepsy.
- Spasticity.
- Severe muscle spasms.
- Intractable pain.
- Crohn’s disease.
- Muscular dystrophy.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Traumatic brain injury.
- A concussion diagnosed by a physician.
- Chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia.
- Chronic pain associated with sickle cell disease.
- Any condition for which a patient is receiving hospice care or palliative care.
- Any condition not otherwise specified in this Subparagraph that a physician, in his medical opinion, considers debilitating to an individual patient and is qualified through his medical education and training to treat.
Any of the following neurodegenerative diseases and conditions
- Alzheimer’s disease.
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
- Huntington’s disease.
- Lewy body dementia.
- Motor neuron disease.
- Parkinson’s disease.
- Spinal muscular atrophy
Any of the following conditions associated with autism spectrum disorder
- Repetitive or self-stimulatory behavior of such severity that the physical health of the person with autism is jeopardized.
- Avoidance of others or inability to communicate of such severity that the physical health of the person with autism is jeopardized.
- Self-injuring behavior.
- Physically aggressive or destructive behavior.
How to register for a med card in Louisiana
You don’t need to register for a medical marijuana card in Louisiana. Simply get your medical marijuana evaluation from a Louisiana state-licensed nurse practitioner or physician, and they’ll upload your recommendation to the dispensary if you’re approved.

Louisiana doesn’t issue medical marijuana cards to its patients. That said, you can ask for a copy of your recommendation. Whether another state accepts your documentation is up to the state you’re visiting. Some states require that you see an in-state physician and register as a visiting patient.
