How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Pennsylvania
Some patients choose to have – or are required to have – a designated caregiver who can purchase cannabis on their behalf. They’re also allowed to transport it and prepare it for patient use.
In Pennsylvania, patients can designate up to two caregivers. Minors are required to have a caregiver. If you are required to have a primary caregiver to help obtain and administer your cannabis, you will need to register your qualified caregiver before the Department will complete your registration certificate.
The registration process to become a caregiver in Pennsylvania depends on whether you will be caring for an existing patient or a new patient. Approval of a caregiver application takes 4-6 weeks, at which point you will receive notification and be asked to pay any applicable fees to obtain your medical marijuana caregiver card.
To qualify as your caregiver, they must:
- be responsible for the management of the wellbeing of the registered patient concerning their palliative use of cannabis,
- be at least 21 years of age (some exceptions may be allowed),
- be a Pennsylvania resident with a valid PA identification and address,
- complete a criminal history background check,
- register for an ID card that will allow for the purchase and pick up of medical cannabis at PA dispensaries.
Caregivers cannot:
- use the patient’s cannabis,
- be the patient’s doctor,
- purchase more than the maximum amount allowed for the patient,
- provide care for more than 5 medical marijuana patients,
- have a criminal conviction in the last 5 years relating to the sale or possession of a controlled substance.
The caregiver application fee is $50.

Having a medical marijuana card is the only legal way to use cannabis in Pennsylvania. Even if adult-use sales begin in the state, having a med card tends to carry a range of additional benefits, such as lower taxes, higher purchase limits, and greater legal protections.
Pennsylvania charges a $50 state registration fee to get your medical cannabis card, though fee reductions may be available if you participate in assistance programs like Medicaid, CHIP, or SNAP.
Patients are also responsible for the cost of the required medical evaluation, which can be completed through NuggMD with no risk to you because you’re only billed if you’re approved by your doctor to access medical cannabis.
No. As cannabis is still federally illegal, most insurance companies won’t cover the cost of products.
Getting a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card with NuggMD can take as little as 15 minutes. However, it can take up to three weeks to get your card in the mail from the state.
Not to worry. There’s no risk if you’re not approved. Patients who aren’t approved for the program will receive their evaluation for free.
You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before your certification has been submitted to the state. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
Absolutely! You aren’t required to see the same doctor every year and you have the right to see any physician you choose. Ready to switch? Just hit the green “Get Your Card” button and start your account.

Check with the state you’re visiting before attempting to make a purchase. And remember it is always illegal to travel with cannabis across state lines, regardless of your status as a medical cannabis patient.
