Qualifying conditions in Florida

The OMMU allows cannabis recommendations for the below qualifying conditions as well as “medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to the others listed.”

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Florida

Medical cannabis patients in Florida may opt to have a caregiver to help them purchase, store and dispense their marijuana treatment. Patients under 18 require a caregiver, which may be their parent or guardian. Florida has several requirements for qualified caregivers.

The caregiver must be listed on the patient’s medical cannabis application when the doctor submits the patient’s recommendation to the state. Caregivers must also fill out their application portion, pay the required fee, and submit it for approval.

To qualify as your caregiver, they must:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Be a Florida resident
  • Take a caregiver certification course from the Florida Department of Health
  • Sign a written agreement to assist the qualified patient with their cannabis
  • If they are not a close relative to the patient, then they must pass a background check

Caregivers cannot:

  • Be a qualified physician
  • Be an employee of a medical cannabis facility or laboratory or have economic interest in them

The caregiver application fee is $75.

How to register for a med card in Florida

Getting a med card in Florida is easy with NuggMD. Just sign up for an account and make an appointment for a first-time in-person visit with a Florida-licensed medical marijuana doctor. NuggMD Florida’s physicians are registered with the state so that patients can complete their applications online instead of via snail mail.

Currently, NuggMD has physicians available in Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Miami.

Once the state receives your physician’s recommendation, they’ll email a link to complete the application online. Florida charges a $75 fee for registration. You’ll be notified within 7-21 days of your application status. If approved, you’ll receive an email confirmation that is valid to use until your physical card arrives. Your Florida medical marijuana card is valid for one year, but you’ll need to follow up with your physician via telehealth at 7 months to keep your card active.

How to renew your med card in Florida

Renewing your medical marijuana card in FL is an annual requirement for the program, but you’re required to see your doctor twice a year. Thankfully, follow-up appointments with NuggMD are even easier than your first appointment.

Simply log into your NuggMD account, update your personal and health information, and see your doctor online.

When it’s time to renew your annual MMJ ID application, you’ll need to see your doctor via telehealth again. You can submit your renewal application and documents 45 days before your card expires. Once your evaluation is complete, you’ll receive an email notice to complete your online registry renewal. Then, just complete the following steps:

  • Log into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry
  • Update and fill out all the required information
  • Pay the $75 renewal fee
