How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in New Mexico
In New Mexico, medical cannabis patients are allowed to designate a primary caregiver with approval from their doctors. Primary caregivers are responsible for managing the well-being of the patient in regard to their medical cannabis treatment.
Caregivers are required to submit a completed and signed Primary Caregiver and Patient Information Form filled out by them, Primary Caregiver and Patient Information Form filled out by the patient’s physician, and Patient Application.
Cannabis patients under 18 are required to have a registered primary caregiver and submit the same forms in addition to the patient’s birth certificate and parental consent form.
Completed applications can be mailed or dropped off to the New Mexico Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis Program.
To qualify as your caregiver, they must:
- be responsible for the well-being and management of the patient’s medical cannabis treatment
- be at least 18 years of age
- be a New Mexico resident
- complete and submit the appropriate forms
There is no fee for submitting a caregiver application.
How to register for a med card in New Mexico
Visit your NuggMD practitioner to get an evaluation. New Mexico residents with a qualifying medical condition are eligible for cannabis treatment. If your practitioner approves your treatment, they will fill out the Medical Cannabis Patient Application.
With your signed recommendation, submit the rest of your application and a copy of your New Mexico ID to the online portal. Minors and patients who require a caregiver will have to complete and submit additional forms.
Once submitted, the state will notify you of your state within 30 days. If approved, they will mail you your medical cannabis card. There is no fee to apply for a New Mexico medical marijuana card.

New Mexico medical cannabis patients are able to purchase up to 15 ounces of medical cannabis tax free and with no potency limits. Patients must pay taxes on any cannabis purchases after the first 15 ounces in a 90-day period. They are also granted protections under employment, medical rights, and criminal processes.
