In addition, the patient must have at least one of the following complicating conditions:
Becoming a medical cannabis patient in New York is easy. There are just a few simple steps. First, you sign up with NuggMD's easy process, then you chat with your new doctor. Once you're approved and receive your emailed certification, sign up with New York's State Registry at https://my.ny.gov/.
After the state approves you, you'll receive a link to print out your temporary recommendation. You can use this temporary recommendation to purchase legal cannabis from registered dispensaries for up to 30 days while you wait for the state to mail out your permanent card. You should receive your permanent card within 3 to 10 days.
In New York, and certified patient can designate up to two caregivers to help them with purchasing and administering medical marijuana. A person can be designated as a caregiver if they are 21 or older, are a resident of New York, and are not the physician that certified the patient.
A caregiver can register with New York once the patient's application is approved by the state. A caregiver is not allowed to assume their duties until they receive their approval and Registry ID card from the state. There is a $50 fee for the application, but the Department currently waives this fee for both patients and designated caregivers.
You must be re-certified by a physician before you can renew your registration. Any qualified, New York licensed physician can provide this re-certification. Please note that you can't purchase medical marijuana with an expired Registry ID, so you should plan to see a doctor for recertification before your current Registry ID is set to expire.
Your certification will usually last for one year, but doctors have the ability to set a shorter timeline if they feel that a one year certification is not warranted. If you have a caregiver, they may not recertify until you have recertified first and received Department approval.
The good news is the recertification process is extremely easy. You'll simply enter your new registration number and answer a couple of yes/no questions.
Patients are not allowed to cultivate cannabis in New York. Only registered organizations can grow, process and sell cannabis and cannabis products.
Your purchase/possession limits are entirely up to your physician. In this sense, New York is very different from other states. Doctors provide precise brand, administration methods and product requirements on recommendations, much like one sees with a prescription at a pharmacy.
New York has the largest population on the East Coast, most of it in New York City's five boroughs, but not the largest number of cannabis patients. Florida holds that crown. Florida has roughly a quarter million patients vs. New York, which has just over 100,000. The program is growing rapidly though, and the state is working toward full recreational legalization.
New York also has one of the most unusual marijuana programs in the country, with doctors recommending cannabis in much the same way they prescribe pharmaceuticals; dictating the exact brand, type, administration method and even dosing of the cannabis. Vape pens in the state are designed to deliver precise doses, and micro-dose pills, tables, capsules and tinctures are common items in New York's swanky dispensaries.
Even more unusual, all cannabis is dispensed by pharmacists, rather than bud tenders. There are only two other states that follow this model, Connecticut and Minnesota.

As someone with chronic pain, and little to no experience with applying for a medical card, I can confidently say this company and its doctors really care. It was so easy to get signed up and all I needed was a brief medical history. I will absolutely be using their services in the future and I 100% recommend to anyone trying to get their medical card in NY state!
Could not have been an easier process! From online doctor interview to receiving temporary ID card by email, it was so straightforward and quick. So happy I found NuggMD!
Just head over to nuggmd.com/new-york and they will connect you with a knowledgeable physician who can evaluate your condition honestly.
Only if they are registered to do so with the state. If they are not, you'll need to find a physician that's registered. All of NuggMD's physicians are registered with the state to provide cannabis certifications.
Yes. Once you receive a certification from NuggMD, you'll need to register with the New York Department of Health (DOH) to be a valid medical marijuana patient recognized by the state of New York.
Not everyone qualifies for cannabis. You must be seriously ill with one of the qualifying conditions for medical cannabis in New York (full list found earlier on this page).
You will not be charged for your evaluation if you're not approved.
You'll need any medical records you can gather, proof of your identity and proof of your residence. You can satisfy both identity and proof of residence with your New York driver's license or ID. If you don't have either of these, you may provide a copy of your current utility bill, government mail to your current address, or a current lease.
You will need to possess a valid New York state ID or driver's license to apply for a medical marijuana card in New York. If you don't have a New York state ID or driver's license, your doctor can verify your identity using other methods. You will need proof of state residency in New York along with your out-of-state photo ID.
Only $149. New York also charges $50 for the state card application, but they're waving this fee for both patients and caregivers right now.
If you're not approved by the doctor after your evaluation, our policy is to simply void the temporary pre-authorization on your card. Customer service is always happy to assist with transactions. You may also change your mind after you've been approved. NuggMD's general policy is that if you've been approved for medical marijuana but haven't registered your certification with the NY DOH, you are eligible for a full refund, so you have nothing to lose!
The Health Commissioner has control over cannabis prices at New York dispensaries. The dispensaries propose the prices, but they are subject to approval. That being said, prices in New York are generally about double the prices on the West Coast.
If you're staying in New York on a temporary basis and need to use cannabis while you're there, you can sign up as a temporary patient. You will have to see a New York medical marijuana doctor in order to be approved, and the process takes a few days, so you should plan ahead. You will be required to show temporary proof of residency such as a rental agreement or utility bill (not a cell phone bill), and the certification will only be valid for the length of your stay.
New York City has outlawed pre-employment testing for THC, but there are exceptions for people who are in certain types of safety-sensitive or government jobs. These people will still be subject to testing for THC, and so will people who live and work outside of New York City.
Yes they can. New York doesn't have specific protections for parents who are also cannabis patients like California does. There are efforts to add protections in New York City, but for the most part, you must consider your parental rights very seriously before you consider using cannabis in New York.
Absolutely. As a matter of fact, it's a good idea to schedule your re-certification evaluation a few weeks before your current one expires.
In many cases, family practitioners are unwilling to issue MMJ recommendations because they simply don't understand the potential medical benefits of cannabis treatment. Most medical schools don't even offer classes that cover the endocannabinoid system--the group of nerve receptors in the human body that interact with THC, CBD and other cannabinoids in cannabis.
This is where services like NuggMD can help. NuggMD's fully-licensed physicians, all registered with the New York Medical Board, have taken the extra time to become educated about the medicinal use of cannabis. They know which medical conditions it's recommended for, and understand how it can be used to treat those conditions. So ask any question you want during your consultation! These doctors know what they're talking about.
