When Can You Get a Medical Card in Alabama?
Recreational cannabis remains illegal in Alabama. The state legalized a limited medical marijuana program in 2021 with the hopes of starting to accept cultivation and processor applications in late 2022.
However, as of August, 2023 the state is still under litigation regarding its licensing program.
Once those businesses get underway physicians who wish to recommend medical cannabis as treatment will be required to take a 4 hour course with an examination and pay a $300 fee. After these requirements are completed, physicians may begin to offer recommendations for patients with qualifying medical conditions.
Medical cannabis limits will be 70 daily dosages or under 75mg of THC. The program is expected to be operational sometime in late 2023 or early 2024.

Qualifying conditions in Alabama
Once the program is fully implemented the qualifying conditions are expected to be:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Cancer-related cachexia, nausea or vomiting, weight loss, or chronic pain
- Crohn’s Disease
- Depression
- Epilepsy or a condition causing seizures
- HIV/AIDS-related nausea or weight loss
- Panic disorder
- Parkinson’s disease
- Persistent nausea that is not significantly responsive to traditional treatment, except for nausea related to pregnancy, cannabis-induced cyclical vomiting syndrome, or cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Sickle Cell Anemia
- Spasticity associated with a motor neuron disease, including
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Spasticity associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or a spinal cord injury
- A terminal illness
- Tourette’s Syndrome
- A condition causing chronic or intractable pain in which conventional therapeutic intervention and opiate therapy is contraindicated or has proved ineffective

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Alabama
With Alabama’s medical cannabis program, minors under 19 years old with qualifying medical conditions may be eligible for medical cannabis treatment. They will require a designated registered caregiver. Adult patients may opt to have a caregiver as well.
Caregivers will be allowed to purchase and administer medical marijuana to the qualified patient. The caregiver must be at least 21 years old unless they are the parent or guardian of a minor medical cannabis patient and a resident of Alabama. They must register with the Commission and be issued a medical cannabis caregiver card.
The official process for applying to be a medical cannabis caregiver will be finalized when the state starts implementing its medical cannabis program sometime in 2023.
To qualify as your caregiver, they must:
- Be at least 21 years old, unless you’re the parent or guardian of a minor medical cannabis patient
- A resisdent of Alabama
- Register with the Commision
- Be issued a medical cannabis caregiver card
Caregivers cannot:
- Use medical cannabis unless they are a qualified patient

Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction.
