How to Get a Texas Medical Card in Minutes
-
1. Signup
Fill out a 30-second, confidential questionnaire. We’ll send it to one of our available medical marijuana doctors for review. Want to meet with the doctor in person instead? No problem! After signup, if a NuggMD Dr. is available near you, you can select online or in office.
-
2. Chat with a Doctor Today
Our state-certified medical practitioners are standing by to help answer your questions and evaluate your cannabis needs. Texas is unique because it doesn’t administer medical marijuana cards but rather requires physicians to write a prescription for patients and submit that to the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT) system.
-
3. Receive Your Cannabis Prescription
If you are approved, your physician will write you a prescription. It can take up to a week for your prescription to be available in the CURT system. Once available, you can fill your prescription at one of the state’s legal dispensaries. Your physician will decide when to see you for your required follow-up (this often occurs roughly 3 months after your initial evaluation). This follow-up costs just $50 with NuggMD.

Texas requires that licensed physicians only prescribe medical cannabis to those with a qualifying condition. Those who do not have any of these conditions are not eligible for the Compassionate Use Program.
The state continues to update regulations regarding its medical marijuana program. They receive feedback and opinions about the current state of their cannabis legislation through their Compassionate Use Program Working Group.
The state most recently removed the term ‘terminal’ from its list of qualifying cancer conditions to include any type of cancer and added PTSD.
For now, having a prescription from a licensed medical doctor is the only way to purchase and consume low-THC cannabis in the state of Texas. It remains illegal to possess or consume cannabis recreationally. The possession of up to 2 ounces of cannabis is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and $2,000 in fines.
Even after adult-use sales come to Texas, medical card holders can expect to enjoy a variety of benefits that aren’t available to recreational consumers.
Texas does not charge a state registration fee for your medical card, so patients are only responsible for the required medical evaluation. NuggMD offers low-cost Texas medical cannabis evaluations, and there’s no risk because you’re only billed if you’re approved for medical cannabis. Additionally, NuggMD offers a reduced rate for the required state follow-up appointments.
No. Health insurance does not cover any cost associated with obtaining your medical cannabis prescription because it remains federally illegal. If legislation progresses, this may change in the future.
The CURT system is available 24 hours a day to physicians, so as soon as your prescription is put into the system, you’re eligible to pick it up at a dispensing center. Some patients have reported a 3-day to 1-week delay for the prescription to be accessible by dispensaries even after the doctor has verified that the prescription is properly entered into the CURT system. If you experience a delay, please contact customer service and we’ll have the doctor check your entry.
With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.
You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before the doctor has entered your prescription for cannabis into the state’s registry. Once you’ve been entered in the registry, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
Yes. As long as the doctor is a registered Texas physician and registered with the CURT system, they are able to provide your cannabis prescription. Be aware that seeing a new doctor means getting a new full evaluation. A new physician can’t provide a simple “follow-up.” Luckily, this initial evaluation isn’t complicated with NuggMD. All you need is your medical records pertaining to your condition and some free time to conduct your evaluation.
Texas does not accept medical cannabis prescriptions or cards from other states. The only way to access medical cannabis in Texas is with a TX medical cannabis prescription.
Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some states may accept your Texas medical marijuana prescription. However, it is illegal to travel across state lines with cannabis, regardless of your status as a medical patient.
Yes, but the state does require that you be a permanent resident of Texas in order to be prescribed medical marijuana. So you’ll at least need proof of residency.
