Frequently asked. Frequently answered.
In Hawaii, residents of the state approved by a physician or APRN and non-residents with a medical marijuana card issued by their home state are eligible for the state’s medical marijuana program. Patients must have a valid government-issued ID or passport, or a licensed practitioner’s recommendation, fill out the required forms, and pay the application fee.
Hawaii has passed legislation allowing physicians and APRNs to recommend medical cannabis for any condition they believe would benefit from its use. Common qualifying conditions include but aren’t limited to:
- Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
- Cachexia or wasting syndrome
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- Lupus
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus

Yes, Hawaii passed legislation that allows physicians and APRNs to recommend medical cannabis for any condition they believe would benefit from its use. This removed the requirement that a patient had to have one of the qualifying conditions from the state’s formerly restrictive list.
Having a Hawaii 329 registration – a Hawaii medical card – is the only way to access medicinal cannabis.
The initial state application fee in Hawaii is $38.50. A renewal application costs the same, or if eligible, the patient may pay $77 for a two-year registration. This is separate from the cost of a required medical evaluation, available at NuggMD for just $98.
Health insurance won’t cover the cost of your medical marijuana products because cannabis is still considered illegal under federal law. This may change in the future if the federal government legalizes cannabis.
NuggMD connects patients with a qualified Hawaii medical cannabis doctor in as little as 15 minutes, with no appointment needed. Once your practitioner has submitted your application to the Hawaii Department of Health, the state will review your application (it may take a few weeks), and you’ll be emailed a link to print your 329 registration.
With NuggMD, if you’re not approved by the practitioner, you get your money back. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.
If you’re not approved for your medical marijuana certification, your evaluation is free.
If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing.
Once you’ve been approved and issued your certification, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue.
We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
You must have an ongoing bona fide relationship with your licensed practitioner recommending cannabis treatment for your eligible condition. Hawaii requires you to see the same practitioner for a two-year renewal.
This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.
Yes, but you will need a valid form of government-issued identification. If you’re applying for an in-state resident 329 card, you’ll be asked to provide proof of residency as well.
Out of state residents can apply for a temporary card to participate in Hawaii’s medical cannabis program during their stay.
