In Hawaii, residents of the state and with qualifying medical conditions non-residents with medical marijuana card issued by their home state are eligible for the state’s medical marijuana program. Patients must have a valid government-issued ID or passport, or a licensed doctor’s recommendation, fill out the required forms, and pay the application fee.

The list of debilitating medical conditions is maintained by Hawaii’s Department of Health. The state does add conditions after a petition is submitted and they review it.

For now, having a Hawaii 329 registration is the only way to access medicinal cannabis. However, the state has announced a push for the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2023.

The initial application fee is $38.50. A renewal application costs the same, or if eligible, the patient may pay $77 for a two-year registration.

Health insurance won’t cover the cost of your medical marijuana products because cannabis is still considered illegal under federal law. This may change in the future if the federal government legalizes cannabis.
