Visit your doctor for a medical marijuana evaluation. If approved, your doctor will submit your MMJ recommendation to the state.

Complete Your Application
Once your doctor submits your recommendation, visit the state’s medical cannabis website to complete your application and pay required state fees. There is a non-refundable fee of $75 for the application (a low-income option is available for those who qualify).

Get Your Card
Once approved by the state, you’ll receive your card in the mail. Your South Dakota medical cannabis recommendation and med card are valid for one year.

What are South Dakota's qualifying conditions?
Each state has their own set of “qualifying conditions” and most don’t need medical proof that you have it.

A “debilitating medical condition,” defined as “a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following:
- Cachexia or wasting syndrome

South Dakota residents with qualifying medical conditions and a licensed doctor’s recommendation are eligible for the medical marijuana program.
A “debilitating medical condition,” defined as “a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following:

- severe, debilitating pain
- severe nausea
- seizures
- severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of multiple sclerosis.
Most states offer a process by which patients can petition the state to request a condition be added to the list of qualifying conditions. To learn more, visit the South Dakota state cannabis program.
Having a medical cannabis card is currently the only way to access legal medical cannabis in South Dakota.
It costs $75 to submit a patient application, $20 to add a caregiver, and additional fees if a cultivation permit is requested. Low-income options are available to patients who qualify. Fees relating to your doctor’s visits are dependent upon your medical health care coverage.
Cannabis is still federally illegal, so many health insurance companies will not cover the costs associated with medical cannabis care.
NuggMD does currently not offer its services in South Dakota. Most states respond to submitted applications within 30 days, though some can take up to 90 days.

If you’re not approved for your medical marijuana certification, your evaluation is free.
If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing.
Once you’ve been approved and issued your certification, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue.
We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.
South Dakota requires that you submit a copy of your valid government-issued ID or Driver’s license and passport.
