How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Mississippi

Mississippi allows medical cannabis patients to designate a caregiver to assist them in purchasing and administering their medical cannabis. Caregivers are legally allowed to visit a dispensary on a patient’s behalf and transport medical cannabis to the patient. They are also allowed to assist the patient in using their medical cannabis. Caregivers are not legally allowed to use the patient’s cannabis themselves.

Patients can designate caregivers at the time they register for Mississippi’s medical cannabis program. Caregivers can also register independently, and a patient can change or add a caregiver through Mississippi’s online portal. A caregiver can assist up to five patients at once. Patients under 21 are required to designate a parent or legal guardian as their caregiver.

The state has a separate set of qualifications for caregivers, especially those not caring for their immediate family. The qualifications to become a caregiver in Mississippi are:

  • Be over 21 years old
  • Be a Mississippi resident
  • Agree to help the patient with their medications
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Care for no more than 5 patients

Caregivers must pay a $25 registration fee and a $37 criminal background check charge.

Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

  • In order to qualify for medical cannabis in Mississippi, you must be a resident of the state. Patients 21 and over can register and purchase cannabis on their own. Patients under 21 need to appoint a parent or legal guardian as a caregiver. Mississippi requires patients under 25 to be certified by two separate medical professionals from two separate medical practices. One of those must be a medical doctor (MD) or a doctor of osteopathy (DO).  All patients must be certified for one of the state’s qualifying medical conditions.

  • The following medical conditions or their treatment qualify for participation in the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program:

cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, glaucoma, spastic quadriplegia, positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), hepatitis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, sickle-cell anemia, Alzheimer’s disease, agitation of dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism, pain refractory to appropriate opioid management, diabetic/peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord disease or severe injury

A patient may also qualify with a chronic terminal or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following:

cachexia or wasting syndrome, chronic pain, severe or intractable nausea, seizures, severe and persistent muscle spasms including, but not limited to, those characteristic of multiple sclerosis

  • If your medical condition isn’t listed under Mississippi’s list of qualifying medical conditions, it’s possible that you could petition to have it added. The Mississippi Department of Health is in charge of overseeing the state’s medical cannabis program, including the list of qualifying medical conditions. You could try petitioning the Department of Health to add your condition to the state’s list.

  • In Mississippi, a medical cannabis card is the only way to legally purchase and possess cannabis. Having a card allows you to visit a state dispensary and purchase cannabis legally. Having a card also allows you to speak to a state-licensed doctor about your medical condition and how cannabis could help. A doctor could help you find the right strain, method of consumption, and dosage. Having a medical cannabis card is also the only way to legally have a caregiver help you with your medical cannabis.

Mississippi extends legal protections to medical cannabis patients. Patients are protected, by law, in parental rights cases.

  • NuggMD isn’t available in Mississippi just yet. When NuggMD becomes available, our prices will be among the most reasonable in the state. Plus, all NuggMD evaluations are completely risk-free. If your physician doesn’t recommend medical cannabis, your evaluation is free. Mississippi charges a separate $25 fee to register with the state for a medical cannabis ID.

  • Cannabis remains an illegal Schedule 1 drug at the federal level, even for medical purposes. As a result, nearly all insurance companies refuse to cover the cost of medical cannabis.

  • NuggMD isn't available in Mississippi yet. Mississippi gives an estimate of about 5 business days to process a medical cannabis application. Mississippi issues its medical cannabis IDs electronically (though your initial medical marijuana evaluation must be conducted in-person), so your ID should arrive as soon as your application is processed.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You'll only be charged if you're approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • NuggMD isn't available in Mississippi yet. In Mississippi, any medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO), nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or optometrist can recommend medical cannabis.

  • This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.

  • In order to register with the state, you’ll need to provide some form of government ID and a current picture of yourself.
