If you are diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition and cannabis is approved as a treatment, they will give you a written recommendation.

Sign Up with the State

Visit the North Dakota MMJ portal to register and complete the required forms. You’ll need a government-issued ID, proof of residency, and a recently dated photograph of yourself. Submit all your required documents and mail the state the required payment of $25.

Get Your Card

The state will email you the results of your application within 30 days. If approved, they will email you an electronic ID. Your North Dakota certification and med card are valid for one year.

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in North Dakota

North Dakota medical cannabis patients may require the assistance of a caregiver to help them with their medical cannabis treatments. Patients under 18 will require a designated caregiver.

Caregivers must fill out the required forms and submit the required documents. Use the state’s online portal. While there is no fee required to submit a designated caregiver application, they are required to pass an annual background check.

Caregivers may care for up to 5 patients but submit individual applications for each. If they are a patient themselves, which is allowed, they are limited to assisting four patients. It will take 2-4 weeks for the state to process your caregiver application.

To qualify as your caregiver, they must:

  • Be 21 years old
  • A North Dakota resident
  • Pass an annual background check
  • Be responsible for the well-being and management of the patient's medical cannabis treatment
  • Abide by the state’s rules and regulations regarding medical cannabis

Caregivers cannot:

  • Have been convicted of a drug-related misdemeanor offense within five years of submitting their application
  • Assist more than five patients, or four if they are a registered patient themselves
  • purchase more than the maximum amount allowed for the patient

There is no fee to submit a caregiver application.

  • Having a medical cannabis card is currently the only way to access legal marijuana in North Dakota.

  • The state requires a $25 fee for patient applications. The costs of required doctor visits are dependent on your medical care coverage.

  • Cannabis is still federally illegal. Because of this many health insurance companies will not cover the costs associated with medical cannabis treatment.

  • NuggMD does currently not offer its services in North Dakota. Once you submit the state’s application and payment, it can take up to 30 days for the state to process your application.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You'll only be charged if you're approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • NuggMD is not available in North Dakota yet. You can see any state-approved practitioner to assess your qualifying condition and discuss medical cannabis treatment.

  • This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.
