Qualifying conditions in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. does not have a list of qualifying medical conditions. Instead, the District leaves the recommendation up to the discretion of the medical professional recommending medical cannabis. Medical professionals can recommend medical cannabis for any condition they feel it will be beneficial in treating. Washington D.C. also allows adults 21 and over to certify themselves for medical cannabis.

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. allows medical cannabis patients to designate a caregiver to help them purchase, administer, and cultivate their cannabis. The District requires patients under 18 to register with a caregiver. In Washington D.C., caregivers must be over 18 years-old and can only care for one patient at a time.

Caregivers must register through a patient’s registration. Patients can designate a caregiver in their initial application or when renewing their card. They can also add a caregiver to their registration at a later date. Caregivers must fill out a form to be uploaded by the patient through D.C.’s online portal.

The registration fee for caregivers is $100, but that fee has been temporarily waived through April 2023. The rules waiving the application fee may be extended.

So, the only way to legally purchase cannabis in D.C. remains a medical cannabis card.

Having a medical cannabis card grants patients access to any of the state’s licensed dispensaries. A medical cannabis card also allows patients to possess more cannabis than recreational users. Medical patients can possess up to 4 ounces of cannabis on their person or up to 8 ounces of cannabis total. Recreational users can only possess up to 2 ounces of cannabis.

Once you have your recommendation, you’ll need to pay the state’s $100 registration fee (if the rules waiving the fee aren’t renewed before they expire in April 2023).

  • As long as cannabis remains illegal on the federal level, even for medical purposes, it’s highly unlikely that any insurance company will cover the cost.

  • NuggMD does currently not offer its services in Washington D.C. The state can take up to 30 days to process your application and issue your card.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You'll only be charged if you're approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
