Are RSO Capsules Better Than Oil?

Of all the products in the cannabis universe, one product stands out for its unique origin. RSO, or Rick Simpson Oil, is a fascinating cannabis extract. Created in 2003 by its namesake, a  Canadian cannabis activist, Simpson first used the oil on himself to treat a case of skin cancer.

Today, RSO is closely tied to cancer treatments but has also been linked to various other conditions. RSO has gained a following through largely anecdotal feedback, with clinical evidence leaving some uncertainty about the full extent of Rick Simpson Oil's actual medical potential.

Despite the uncertainty, in the twenty-plus years since RSO was invented, the extract has become synonymous with several types of internal and topical consumption. But, what about RSO capsules?

How is RSO Typically Used?

RSO is typically consumed orally or applied topically. A few vape options, or items claiming to be vapes, have hit the market, but for the most part, Rick Simpson Oil is used in the following formats:

  • RSO Syringes: Great for precise dosing, RSO syringes may allow users to efficiently and accurately dose their medicine topically or orally.
  • RSO Edibles: Infused foods and beverages often help mask RSO's potent taste. Patients also report longer-lasting effects and a delayed onset time.
  • RSO Topicals: Topicals might provide localized relief without reaching the bloodstream, potentially helpful for certain forms of cancer, skin conditions, and more.
  • RSO Tincture: Consumed sublingually (under the tongue), tinctures offer precise, discreet doses that often take effect in just a few minutes.
  • RSO Capsules: A precise, discreet option that mirrors traditional medications and supplements, with effects and onset time similar to an edible.

Benefits of Using RSO Capsules

Benefits of RSO capsules

RSO capsules offer a slightly different approach, providing effects similar to those of an edible. Consider the many possible benefits of consuming RSO in capsule form.

Discreet and Familiar

RSO capsules provide medical patients with a familiar form factor. Individuals can use RSO at any place at any time without anyone knowing about their cannabis consumption if that’s a concern.

Convenience and Cleanliness

Between the stickiness when used as a topical and difficulty removing from a syringe, RSO can be messy. RSO capsules do away with much of the mess, as the oil is contained within the pill. You may run into a mess if you’re making the pills at home. Any store-bought product may take the messy legwork out of the process.

Precise Dosing

Capsules help eliminate dosing concerns often associated with other consumption methods. When manufactured by a trusted source, RSO capsules contain a specific amount of oil rather than an arbitrary dosage that you might encounter with a homemade edible and even some less reputable brands.

Dosing is crucial when it comes to Rick Simpson Oil. Overconsumption is possible for anyone who rushes into larger doses. Many recommend following a "start low, go slow" type of buildup. Consumers are often advised to start with a dose as small as one-third to half a grain of rice and gradually increase over time. However, the dosing recommendations will change depending on your medical needs and chosen consumption method.

Possible Medical Advantages

Research into the specific advantages of RSO is limited at this time. However, the delivery method has been linked to improved efficacy and consumption experience overall.

RSO contains various plant compounds, including CBD and THC. Extensive research into the importance of these cannabinoids and other plant compounds suggests that when the compounds are consumed together, users may experience potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory benefits. Additional studies have shown that compounds appear to work best when used together, producing a number of potential therapeutic benefits.1

Research into terpenoids and flavonoids suggests these compounds may also enhance therapeutic effects in various ways. Particular analyses note possible effects such as altering blood-brain barrier permeability and providing additional anti-inflammatory benefits. Research also suggests that CBD in cannabis may reduce airway irritation and inflammation compared to THC consumed on its own.2

Many of these effects are part of the belief that the full-spectrum experience allows consumers to get the most benefit from the plant, with the combined compounds creating an effect that many call the entourage effect.

Drawbacks to Using RSO Capsules

RSO capsules don’t have any specific drawbacks outside of those of more traditional RSO products. However, anyone with a reluctance or fear of swallowing pills might find the experience more challenging than other consumption methods.

Regarding RSO products in general, there are a couple of drawbacks and concerns that people should be aware of before consuming them.

  1. High THC Content: RSO contains high doses of THC, which may be more than what some newcomers and cannabis consumers with low tolerances may be used to.
  2. Possibly Messy: Many consumption methods, including topicals and syringes, can create a mess when applied or stored improperly. The same can occur if making capsules or edibles at home.

Dosing RSO Capsules

Dosing RSO pills

Getting an accurate dose from an RSO capsule is essential. The most effective way to ensure you receive the correct dosage is to buy from reputable manufacturers. These RSO pills are made by licensed brands that adhere to product guidelines. Adhering to guidelines includes lab testing and packaging with stated dosages. These products should come with lab test results you can find by scanning a QR code on the package or visiting the company's website.

Homemade RSO pills are typically less accurate than manufactured branded products, meaning your dosage may not be as precise as intended. Whether making RSO capsules at home or picking up some from a legal source, you'll want to ensure that the pills were produced using best practices and possibly a capsule-filling machine over hand filling, which can be less precise.

Even if the dosage is accurate, remember that RSO is highly potent, especially for newcomers and anyone with a low tolerance. A general rule of thumb is to start with a "start low, go slow" method. Start with a low dosage, typically the size of a single piece of rice or less. Wait 30 minutes to 2 hours before deciding if you need an additional dose.

Can You Make RSO Capsules at Home?

Yes, you can make RSO pills at home using either a capsule-filling machine or a manual application.

There are some advantages to homemade RSO pills, specifically the ability to dose the pills to your specifications. However, the process can be time-consuming and messy. Still, some claim that while making DIY RSO pills can be messy, it often remains less of a cleanup than using a syringe.

But what if you prefer CBD? Is there such a thing as CBD RSO? And can you make it at home?

While RSO is often associated with high-THC strains, offerings have expanded to allow consumers to enjoy high-CBD and ratioed products like 50:50 THC:CBD RSO. To achieve the ideal end result, follow the same steps as making standard RSO, using one or more strains high in CBD.

Tips for Buying the Best RSO Capsules

Tips for buying RSO capsules

When buying RSO pills, consider a few key points:3

  • Retailer: Buy RSO from licensed dispensaries and online retailers to best ensure the product is dosed accurately and made correctly.
  • Lab Tests: Products should contain a link to lab test results that verify the dosage and contents of the product. If you can't find these results, consider buying another option.
  • Company Reputation: Look for a producer with a stellar reputation for producing RSO or other cannabis products. Consistency is a tremendous sign.
  • Customer Reviews: Like the point above, consumer reputation is essential, as this type of feedback allows you to understand what people like you went through when trying out a particular product.
