How do I get a California medical marijuana card?

To get a California medical marijuana recommendation, you must be evaluated by a licensed California physician. If the doctor determines that medical cannabis is appropriate for your condition, they will issue a written recommendation. Registering for a state-issued Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) is optional.

What do I need to complete a medical cannabis evaluation in California?

To complete a medical cannabis evaluation, you’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID to verify your identity and age. While medical records are not required, providing relevant documentation may help your physician evaluate your condition.

If you plan to apply for a state-issued MMIC, you will also need proof of California residency when registering with your county.

Do I need to register for an MMIC in California?

No. Registering for an MMIC is voluntary.

A valid physician’s recommendation is sufficient to purchase medical cannabis in California. However, patients who choose to obtain an MMIC may receive additional benefits, such as exemption from state sales and use tax and streamlined verification of patient status.

What’s the difference between a doctor’s recommendation and an MMIC?

In California, a doctor’s recommendation is the document issued by a licensed physician that allows you to legally purchase medical cannabis. This is the minimum required to access medical dispensaries. If approved, your evaluation through NuggMD would unlock this access.

An MMIC (Medical Marijuana Identification Card) is a possible next step once approved: an optional state-issued ID card administered by your county health department. It serves as official verification of your patient status and provides an exemption from state sales and use tax on medical cannabis purchases.

What are the benefits that come with a California MMIC?

Even though adult-use cannabis is legal in California, medical patients may receive additional benefits.

With a physician’s recommendation, patients may:

  • Purchase larger quantities than adult-use consumers (adult-use is generally limited to 1 ounce of flower or 8 grams of concentrate per transaction).
  • Access products formulated specifically for medical use.

With a state-issued MMIC, patients:

  • Are exempt from state sales and use tax on medical cannabis purchases.
  • Receive streamlined verification of patient status.

California law also provides certain legal protections for registered medical cannabis patients, including protections related to organ transplant eligibility.

Technically, no. Adults 21 and older may legally purchase recreational cannabis in California without a medical recommendation.

However, medical cannabis patients receive certain benefits, like access to higher purchase limits and exemption from state sales tax if registered with a state-issued MMIC.

What identification do I need for a California medical cannabis evaluation?

To complete a medical cannabis evaluation in California, you’ll need a valid, government-issued photo ID to verify your identity and age. This may include a U.S. driver’s license, state ID card, passport, or other federal identification.

If you plan to apply for a state-issued MMIC, you’ll also need proof of California residency when registering with your county health department.

How can I find a qualified medical marijuana doctor in California?

NuggMD California connects patients with licensed physicians who are authorized to recommend medical cannabis. All participating doctors hold active California medical licenses and conduct evaluations in compliance with state law.

How much does it cost to get a medical marijuana evaluation in California using NuggMD?

NuggMD offers affordable online medical cannabis evaluations, with pricing determined at checkout based on your selected options.

With NuggMD, California medical marijuana evaluations start at just $55 ($75 with an optional wallet-sized ID card), and you are only charged if the physician issues your prescription.

How much does it cost to register for the MMIC in California?

Registration for a California MMIC is optional. If you choose to apply, you will pay a fee set by your county health department. Fees vary by county.

Who qualifies for medical marijuana in California?

To qualify for medical cannabis in California, you must be evaluated by a licensed California physician and receive a written recommendation. Patients must be at least 18 years old. Minors may qualify with a parent or legal guardian designated as their primary caregiver.

California does have a list of qualifying conditions, but CA law also allows physicians to recommend cannabis if they believe it may provide relief. If your condition isn't outright listed, you may still qualify.

What medical conditions qualify for medicinal cannabis treatments in California?

California physicians may recommend medical cannabis for conditions including:

  • AIDS
  • Anorexia
  • Arthritis
  • Cachexia
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Migraines
  • Muscle spasms
  • Seizures
  • Severe nausea

Doctors may also recommend cannabis for other chronic or persistent medical conditions if they determine it may benefit the patient.

What if my medical condition isn’t listed? Am I still eligible for medical marijuana in California?

Yes. California law allows physicians to recommend cannabis for other serious or chronic medical conditions beyond the listed examples. If your doctor believes medical cannabis may benefit your condition, you may still qualify.

Will health insurance cover the cost of my medical marijuana?

No. While medical cannabis has been moved to Schedule III, health insurance plans are not currently required to cover medical cannabis evaluations or cannabis purchases in California. Other physicians may accept insurance, and some states are working on legislation that would allow or even require insurance companies to cover cannabis treatment

Note: this may change with the upcoming federal regulatory changes, including revisions to Medicare coverage of CBD.

How long will it take to get my California recommendation with NuggMD?

The entire process, from signup, takes less than 20 minutes for most patients. If approved, you’ll receive a digital copy of your recommendation by email shortly after your appointment. A physical copy is mailed separately and typically arrives within several business days.

How long does it take for the state of California to process a medical marijuana registration?

If you apply for a state-issued MMIC, your county health department has up to 30 days to process your application. Once approved, your MMIC is typically issued within a few additional business days.

Can I use my temporary recommendation today?

Yes. Once approved, you can use your digital recommendation to purchase medical cannabis on the same day you receive it. Some dispensaries may require a physical copy for first-time visits, so it’s a good idea to confirm their policy in advance.

Can you mail my MMJ card to another state?

Yes. Your recommendation (and the physical ID card if you choose that option) can be mailed to any U.S. address. However, it is only valid for use in California, and cannabis products cannot be shipped across state lines.

Does my medical marijuana authorization need to be renewed in California?

Yes. Medical cannabis recommendations issued through NuggMD are valid for one year. After expiration, you must complete a new evaluation to continue purchasing medical cannabis legally in California. The good news is that our renewal process is straightforward and quick.

How do I renew my California medical cannabis recommendation?

Renewals can be completed entirely online through NuggMD. After a brief evaluation with a licensed physician, you’ll receive an updated digital recommendation. A physical copy is mailed separately.

You may choose any licensed California physician authorized to recommend medical cannabis, including a different provider than before.

Can I change the date my recommendation was issued?

No. Your medical cannabis recommendation is a legal medical document issued by a licensed physician. The date of issuance cannot be altered.

What if I am not approved for medical marijuana?

With NuggMD, you are approved by the physician or you get your money back. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

What can I do if I haven't received my recommendation?

If your physical copy has not arrived within 11 days of being mailed or within 30 days of being approved, email support at support@nuggmd.com for assistance. Replacement copies are available if needed.

What is NuggMD's refund policy in California?

We provide a full refund within 14 days for California residents if you have not used the certification at any dispensary.

If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing.

Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you are 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, is the most important thing to us. Once you are refunded, we are legally required to deactivate your medical recommendation and ID: you will not be able to use your recommendation legally at any dispensary in California, nor benefit from the legal coverage a medical recommendation offers.

Once a refund has been initiated, please allow for 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • Edibles
  • Tinctures and oils
  • Capsules
  • Topicals

How do I buy medical cannabis in California?

Once approved, you may use your medical cannabis recommendation right away to purchase products from licensed California dispensaries and delivery services. A digital copy of your recommendation is typically sufficient, though some dispensaries may require a physical copy for first-time visits.

Medical cannabis patients must be at least 18 years old and have a current recommendation from a licensed practitioner to purchase products from a medical dispensary. Adults 21 and older may purchase cannabis for recreational use at licensed dispensaries.

How much cannabis can I buy in California?

Adult-use consumers may purchase up to one ounce of cannabis flower or up to eight grams of concentrate per transaction.

Medical cannabis patients may purchase larger quantities consistent with their physician’s recommendation, often up to eight ounces of dried cannabis.

What are the possession and cultivation limits for medical cannabis patients in California?

Medical cannabis patients may possess larger quantities of cannabis than adult-use consumers, consistent with their physician’s recommendation. Many patients are permitted up to eight ounces of dried cannabis.

Under California law, adults may cultivate up to six plants per residence. Local regulations may impose additional rules on cultivation.

Can I give cannabis as a gift in California?

Yes, you can! The law allows California residents to give no more than one ounce of cannabis flower or no more than 8 grams of marijuana concentrate as a gift to individuals 21 and over. You cannot, however, receive any sort of compensation for your gift.

No. Cannabis use is generally prohibited in public places and anywhere tobacco smoking is restricted. Use is typically limited to private property or licensed consumption lounges where permitted.

Are there marijuana delivery services in California?

Yes. California permits licensed dispensaries and non-storefront retailers to deliver medical and adult-use cannabis directly to consumers.

Can my California MMJ recommendation be used in other states?

Some states offer reciprocity to out-of-state patients, and some don't. Some states that offer reciprocity only accept MMJ cards from certain states. Before you travel, check the regulations in your destination state.

Can I travel within California with medical cannabis?

Yes, you may transport medical cannabis within California as long as it remains within legal possession limits and is not used while driving. It is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines.

Does California accept out of state medical marijuana cards?

No. While many other states accept California’s medical marijuana cards, California doesn’t have a reciprocity policy.

A valid medical cannabis recommendation provides certain legal protections under California law for possession and use within permitted limits. However, patients must still comply with state and local regulations. Status as a California medical cannabis patient does not override federal law.

Can I still get fired for using cannabis in California?

California law limits how employers may use cannabis test results in hiring decisions. However, employers may still enforce drug-free workplace policies and prohibit on-duty impairment. Certain positions, including safety-sensitive and federally regulated roles, may be subject to different rules.

Does a medical marijuana recommendation affect my gun ownership rights in California?

Yes. Federal law prohibits individuals who use cannabis, including state-legal medical cannabis, from purchasing or possessing firearms. While California allows medical marijuana, federal firearm restrictions still apply.

Yes. California law allows landlords to prohibit smoking or cannabis use on their property. Patients should review their lease agreement before using medical cannabis in a rental unit.
