How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Oregon

Patients can choose to designate a caregiver to assist them with their medical cannabis. A caregiver can help a patient purchase, administer, and cultivate their medical cannabis. Minor patients require a parent or legal guardian to serve as their caregiver.

In Oregon, only the patient can designate a caregiver. Caregivers cannot register independently. Instead, the patient can designate a caregiver when they register or renew. The state also gives patients the option of filling out a form to add or change a caregiver on their registration.

The qualifications to become a caregiver in Oregon are fairly simple. Caregivers must be at least 18 years-old, and they must assume “significant responsibility” in the care of a person diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition, as defined under Oregon’s medical cannabis law.

Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

  • Any Oregon resident that has been diagnosed with one of the state’s qualifying medical conditions is eligible for medical cannabis. In order to register for medical cannabis, the patient must receive a formal recommendation from a physician. Patients under 18 will need to register with a parent or legal guardian to serve as their caregiver.

  • Here is the full list of Oregon qualifying conditions:

    • Cancer
    • Glaucoma
    • A degenerative or pervasive neurological disorder
    • HIV/AIDS
    • PTSD
    • Cachexia
    • Severe pain
    • Severe nausea
    • Seizures
    • Persistent muscle spasms
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • The state’s medical cannabis program is managed by the Oregon Health Authority. They’re in charge of the program and the list of qualifying medical conditions. If your medical condition isn’t recognized by the state, it may be possible to petition the OHA to have your condition added. It also may be possible to contact your representatives in the Oregon state legislature to have your condition added as well.

  • While recreational cannabis has been legal in Oregon for quite some time, there are a few great benefits reserved for medical patients in the state. In Oregon, medical cannabis patients can purchase, possess, and cultivate significantly more cannabis than recreational users. Oregon patients can possess up to 24 ounces of cannabis, while recreational users are capped at having just 2 ounces on their person and 8 ounces total in their home. Recreational users in Oregon can have up to 4 mature cannabis plants and 6 immature plants. Medical patients can cultivate up to 6 mature plants and 18 seedlings.

Once of the biggest benefits to medical cannabis cardholders in Oregon is definitely the savings on tax. Recreational users can pay up to 20% in tax on their cannabis purchases. However, medical cannabis patients aren’t charged any tax on their medical cannabis purchases.

  • NuggMD isn’t available in Oregon yet, but once it is we’ll charge some of the most accessible rates in the state. There's no risk when using NuggMD, because patients who don't qualify for the program will get their evaluation for free! After their evaluation, MMJ patients are also responsible for Oregon’s $200 state registration fee.

  • Cannabis remains an illegal, Schedule 1 drug at the federal level. Because cannabis is illegal in the eyes of the federal government, nearly all insurance companies refuse to cover the cost of medical cannabis.

  • NuggMD does currently not offer its services in Oregon. Once you submit your application, the state will send you a 30-day receipt letter that you can use as your temporary ID for 30 days. Sometime within that 30-day period, you’ll receive your permanent ID, if your application is approved. If there’s an issue with your application, Oregon gives you 14 days to revise and resubmit it.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You'll only be charged if you're approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • NuggMD does currently not offer its services in Oregon. In Oregon, any state-licensed medical doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, or naturopathic physician can recommend medical cannabis.

  • This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.
