How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Utah

Visit the Utah state cannabis portal and create an account. This is where your practitioner will submit your recommendation if you're approved for treatment with medical marijuana.

Make an appointment with a licensed practitioner to get evaluated for medical marijuana treatment. If approved, the practitioner will submit your application through the state's online portal.

What are Utah's qualifying conditions?

Each state has their own set of “qualifying conditions” and most don’t need medical proof that you have it.

  • A condition resulting in the individual receiving hospice care.
  • A rare condition or disease that affects less than 200,000 individuals in the U.S., as defined in federal law, and that is not adequately managed despite treatment attempts using conventional medications (other than opioids or opiates) or physical interventions.
  • Acute pain that is expected to last for 2 weeks or longer for an acute condition, including a surgical procedure, for which a medical professional may generally prescribe opioids for a limited duration.
  • Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
  • Autism.
  • Cancer.
  • Cachexia.
  • Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Epilepsy or debilitating seizures.
  • HIV or acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
  • Multiple sclerosis or persistent and debilitating muscle spasms.
  • Persistent nausea that is not significantly responsive to traditional treatment, except for nausea related to: pregnancy, cannabis-induced cyclical vomiting syndrome, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.
  • Persistent pain lasting longer than two weeks that is not adequately managed, in the qualified medical provider’s opinion, despite treatment attempts using conventional medications other than opioids or opiates or physical interventions.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is being treated and monitored by a licensed health therapist (defined here), and that: has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider by the Veterans Administration and documented in the patient’s record; or has been diagnosed or confirmed by evaluation from a psychiatrist, masters prepared psychologist, a masters prepared licensed clinical social worker, or a psychiatric APRN.
  • Terminal illness when the patient’s life expectancy is less than six months.

Patients with conditions not listed may petition the Compassionate Use Board for a medical cannabis card. It is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Currently, the only way to access legal cannabis in Utah is to apply and be approved for a medical cannabis card.

The following fees apply to medical cannabis cards:

  • Patient Card (initial): $15
  • Patient Card (six-month renewal): $15
  • Guardian Card (initial): $68.25
  • Guardian Card (six-month renewal): $24
  • Caregiver Card (initial): $68.25
  • Caregiver Card (six-month renewal): $14
  • Non-Utah Resident Card (initial & renewal): $15

 

The cost of a doctor’s visits will depend on your medical health care coverage.

Cannabis is still federally illegal so many health insurance companies will not cover the costs associated with medical cannabis treatment.

NuggMD does currently not offer its services in Utah. The state can take up to 90 days to review your application and deliver your medical card.

With NuggMD, if you’re not approved get your money back, automatically. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

If you’re not approved for your medical marijuana certification, your evaluation is free.

If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing.

Once you’ve been approved and issued your certification, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue.

We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.
