How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Utah
Visit the Utah state cannabis portal and create an account. This is where your doctor will submit your recommendation if you're approved for treatment with medical marijuana.
Make an appointment with a licensed doctor to get evaluated for medical marijuana treatment. If approved, the doctor will submit your application through the state's online portal.
Once your doctor submits your application to the state, you’ll need to log onto the Utah cannabis portal to fill out the remaining information.
The state can take up to 90 days to review and deliver your medical marijuana card. If approved, your medical card is valid for six months.

Qualifying conditions in Utah
- A condition resulting in the individual receiving hospice care
- A rare condition or disease that affects less than 200,000 individuals in the U.S., as defined in federal law, and that is not adequately managed despite treatment attempts using conventional medications (other than opioids or opiates) or physical interventions
- Acute pain that is expected to last for 2 weeks or longer for an acute condition, including a surgical procedure, for which a medical professional may generally prescribe opioids for a limited duration
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Autism
- Cancer
- Cachexia
- Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- Epilepsy or debilitating seizures
- HIV or acquired immune deficiency syndrome
- Multiple sclerosis or persistent and debilitating muscle spasms
- Persistent nausea that is not significantly responsive to traditional treatment, except for nausea related to: pregnancy, cannabis-induced cyclical vomiting syndrome, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
- Persistent pain lasting longer than two weeks that is not adequately managed, in the qualified medical provider’s opinion, despite treatment attempts using conventional medications other than opioids or opiates or physical interventions
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is being treated and monitored by a licensed health therapist (defined here), and that: has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider by the Veterans Administration and documented in the patient’s record; or has been diagnosed or confirmed by evaluation from a psychiatrist, masters prepared psychologist, a masters prepared licensed clinical social worker, or a psychiatric APRN
- Terminal illness when the patient’s life expectancy is less than six months
How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Utah
Medical cannabis patients in Utah can opt to have a caregiver to help them maintain their medical cannabis treatment. Caregivers must register with the state but a patient but first designate them on their patient application.
Once the application is complete, the fee is paid, and the caregiver submits a background check, the state will review the account within 15 days. If all the requirements are met, the state will email the caregiver their card.
To qualify as your caregiver, they must:
- Must be 21 or older
- Care for and maintain the patient's cannabis treatment
- Fill out the required application
- Complete a background check
- Pay the required fees
Caregivers cannot:
- use the patient’s cannabis,
- be the patient’s doctor,
- purchase more than the maximum amount allowed for the patient
The caregiver application fee is $68.25.
How to register for a med card in Utah
First, create an account via the Utah state cannabis portal. Then visit a licensed medical doctor. If you have a qualifying medical condition and are approved for medical cannabis treatment, the doctor will submit your recommendation.
Once the application is completed and submitted along with the rest of the required documents, the state will process it within 15 days. You’ll need to enter all of the requested information and pay the state registration fee of $75.
How to renew your med card in Utah

Patients with conditions not listed may petition the Compassionate Use Board for a medical cannabis card. It is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Currently, the only way to access legal cannabis in Utah is to apply and be approved for a medical cannabis card.

You'll only be charged if you're approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Once you've been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you're 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
