Qualifying Medical Conditions for a California Medical Card
In California, obtaining a medical cannabis card grants patients access to a variety of benefits, like a wider variety of products, lower taxes, higher possession limits, access to a cannabis caregiver, and more.
To qualify for a CA medical card, though, one must have at least one of the state's qualifying medical conditions. Potential patients must also meet other state-specified requirements.

List of Qualifying Conditions for a Medical Card in California
California was the first state to allow medical cannabis use, approving the Compassionate Use Act in 1996. Originally listing eight qualifying conditions for a medical card, the list has expanded to include the following:

CA Medical Card Requirements
Do you have to be a resident to get a medical card? Yes.
Do you need to be a permanent California state resident? Yes.
How old do you need to be to get a CA med card? Patients 18 and over can get a California medical card if they can show proof of residency. Patients under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian, who will become their designated caregiver.
If you meet these qualifications, you must see a state-licensed physician for an evaluation. In California, your doctor may use their own discretion to recommend cannabis for any condition they feel will benefit from it. As long as your physician thinks medical cannabis is a good fit, you can get a recommendation.
You Have a Qualifying Condition in California… Now What?
If you believe you meet the requirements — or if you're uncertain — the next step is to get an evaluation. A licensed CA physician can assess your eligibility for medical cannabis. Once you have completed your evaluation, you can proceed to submit your optional application to the state for approval as a patient. Or you can simply use your recommendation for purchases, although only a California MMIC confers the tax exemption.
