Considering Getting a Medical Cannabis Card in Florida

  • Individuals in Florida must first obtain a medical marijuana recommendation from a qualified physician. After receiving a medical marijuana recommendation, patients will be put into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry and given a patient identification number. Individuals must then submit an application to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use, providing proof of residency and a 2x2 full-face photo.

  • Florida requires a valid government-issued Florida ID or driver’s license to obtain a medical cannabis card.

  • If you want to prove residency as a seasonal resident, you have to provide a utility bill that you have received in the last two months, in addition to a copy of either your voter's registration, mail from some sort of financial institution, a property tax bill mail from a state, federal, or county government department, or a mortgage/lease agreement.

  • Only doctors who've been licensed by the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) are allowed to certify medical marijuana patients in Florida.

  • No. Only doctors can recommend medical marijuana in Florida.

  • You can see a Florida state-licensed physician with NuggMD Florida for just $179 for your first visit and $149 for your renewal

  • The fee for a medical marijuana card in Florida is $75. This is separate from the cost of your medical evaluation.

  • Florida ruling 64-4.011 states that all Florida caregiver and patients must possess a Medical Marijuana Use Registry card. You can view our Registry card. You can view our Registry Identification Cards page to find out more about the process.

  • Yes. Florida does not prohibit someone with a criminal record from becoming a medical marijuana patient.

  • You should discuss this with your probation officer BEFORE filling out an application. Some patients are allowed by their parole officers to join the program, but it is up to the individual parole officer.

  • Florida residents with qualifying medical conditions are eligible to apply for the state’s medical marijuana program. A licensed Florida physician must recommend medical cannabis treatment and submit their recommendation for the patient to the state.

  • Qualifying conditions in Florida include -Cancer -Glaucoma -HIV/AIDS -Epilepsy -Crohn's disease -Multiple sclerosis - PTSD -Parkinson's disease -ALS -Medical condition of the same kind or class as or comparable to the others listed. -A terminal condition diagnosed by a physician other than the qualified physician issuing the physician certification. -Chronic nonmalignant pain caused by a qualifying medical condition and persists beyond the usual course of that qualifying medical condition.

  • The Florida MMJ constitutional amendment allows its state-licensed weed doctors to certify medical conditions of the same class of the specific qualifying conditions. As such, many common chronic illnesses and symptoms are allowed to be registered for medicinal cannabis treatments. If you're considering medical marijuana for your medical conditions, feel free to seek a consultation from a licensed weed doctor in your local area.

  • You might! Florida's OMMU states that qualifying conditions include "Medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to the others listed.

  • Cannabis, whether medical or recreational, remains federally illegal. This status prohibits health insurance from covering medical cannabis as treatment. This may change as legislation develops.

  • Currently, the only way to access legal cannabis in Florida is by having a medical marijuana card. But medical patients can expect a range of benefits even after adult-use sales eventually come to the state.

Applying for a Florida Medical Card

  • Patients can see a doctor for a medical cannabis evaluation through NuggMD in as little as 15 minutes. Once your application is submitted, the state will notify you of its status between 7 and 21 days.

  • Online applications with the state of Florida for medical cannabis cards take about 10 business days to be approved. If you are submitting your application by mail, expect 12-15 business days.

  • Absolutely. You have the right to see whatever practitioner you choose to renew your medical marijuana certification, so long as they're licensed in the state and qualified to certify patients for cannabis use. All NuggMD practitioners are fully licensed in the state for which they provide evaluations and have obtained all state-required education and certifications to recommend cannabis.

  • It costs just $149 to get your Florida renewal evaluation with NuggMD Florida.

  • Florida medical marijuana cards are usually valid for one year. The expiration date will be printed right on the ID. Florida recommends that you begin the renewal process 45 days before your card expires to ensure there isn't a lapse between IDs. If you got your initial evaluation through NuggMD, we'll send an email reminder when it's time to renew.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

How to Use Your Florida Medical Card

  • In addition to dried flower, concentrates, and topicals, Florida medical marijuana patients may purchase lozenges, gummies, baked goods, chocolate, and drink powders.

  • Yes, you can legally smoke medical cannabis.

  • Individuals must be 18 to purchase medical cannabis in Florida. Minor patients are not permitted to purchase cannabis and it must be done by their designated caregiver.

  • Qualified Florida medical marijuana patients can purchase medical marijuana after obtaining a physician's recommendation. The recommending physician will input the “order” into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry. The patient will then be able to fill the order at a licensed medical marijuana treatment center.

  • In order to purchase edibles, Florida medical marijuana patients must be approved by their physician. Physicians can add edibles to already existing certifications by request, so there is no need for a patient to be re-certified before they can receive edibles.

  • Edibles in Florida may not contain more than 200mg of THC per package and no more than 10mg of THC per serving.

  • Purchasing limits for smokable cannabis flower is 2.5 ounces allotted every 35 days and a possession limit of no more than 4 ounces at any given time. Along with an MMJ registration, patients will receive information about particular dosages and approved delivery methods. In most cases, medical marijuana doctors will issue a prescription with a certification for inhalation, oral, topical, and smokable cannabis. However, if smokable marijuana presents too great a risk for a specific medical condition, it will be excluded from the prescription. Non-smokable cannabis product limits are set for a 70-day supply, and certifying physicians can recommend up to three 70-day periods. Within a single 70-day period, medical patients are limited to more than 4,200mg of THC in an edible, 24,500mg of THC in vaporizable form, 14,000mg of THC in an oral method like capsules and tinctures, 13,300mg of THC for sublingual-methods, 13,650mg of THC for suppository products, and 10,500mg of THC for topicals.

  • Florida medical marijuana patients do not pay taxes on their medical marijuana purchases.

  • For non-smokable cannabis, the limit is set by the patient's qualifying physician. Florida allows medical marijuana patients to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of smokable cannabis every 35 days. Medical marijuana patients can store up to 4 ounces or a 70-day supply of smokable cannabis in their homes. A physician can request an exception from the state if they feel it is medically necessary for a patient to possess more cannabis. A patient must have a specific recommendation from their recommending physician for smokable flower.

  • No, it is illegal in Florida to gift any individual any amount of medical cannabis.

  • No. Medical marijuana must be consumed in private places in Florida, like your home.

  • No. Recreational cannabis is illegal in Florida, and medical cannabis is to be consumed in private.

  • Cannabis should be in a sealed container or the vehicle's trunk during transport in Florida. It is illegal to consume cannabis while operating a vehicle or be impaired while driving.

  • Medical marijuana patients in Florida can have their cannabis delivered. Only state-licensed cannabis dispensaries can deliver medical cannabis in Florida. and you need to have a valid medical marijuana ID to receive the delivery.

  • This depends on the state to which you’re traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don’t allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.

  • No, Florida does not have reciprocity for out-of-state medical marijuana patients.

  • Florida's MMJ legislation does not legalize the cultivation of marijuana for personal use.

  • Your Florida medical cannabis card expires one year from the date of issuance, and it is recommended to renew within 45 days of your expiration date to avoid any lapse in medical patient status.

  • Yes. Under Florida law, cities can ban cannabis businesses.

How to Become a Caregiver in Florida

  • Any Florida resident over the age of 21 who agrees in writing to assist in the use of medical cannabis by qualified patients, passes a background check unless the caregiver is a close relative of the patient, and has completed a caregiver certification course is allowed to become a caregiver in Florida.

  • You must be over 21 and a permanent resident of the state. To become a caregiver, a patient's healthcare provider must add you to the patient's profile in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR), after which you will receive an email to complete your application and submit your fee; you can learn more about signing up to become a caregiver in Florida on the state's website.

  • Yes, but they must have a parent or guardian acting as a caregiver.

  • Yes. However, to serve as a caregiver for another patient, you must apply separately as both a patient and a caregiver.
