Qualifying conditions in Massachusetts

Per Massachusetts state law, new applicants and renewing patients must have one of the following debilitating medical conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Positive status for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Diseases and conditions determined to be debilitating, per the applicant’s healthcare provider

The state defines “debilitating” as “causing weakness, cachexia, wasting syndrome, intractable pain, or nausea, or impairing strength or ability, and progressing to such an extent that one or more of a patient’s major life activities is substantially limited.”

How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Massachusetts

Some patients choose to have – or are required to have – a designated caregiver. A designated caregiver can:

  • transport patients to their Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MTC)
  • obtain and transport cannabis from an MTC for the patient
  • cultivate for a patient that has a Hardship Cultivation Registration
  • prepare and administer the cannabis to the patient

A caregiver must be at least 21 years old and possess a government-issued ID. The patient must authorize you as their caregiver by providing you with a PIN number following completion of their own application. A patient may establish up to two caregivers.

To register, you'll need your government-issued ID and a passport-style photo. If you use a Massachusetts ID, the department may be able to use the photo in your RMV record. Once you have your PIN, ID, and photo (if using a non-MA ID), you'll submit your application to the state's Medical Use of Marijuana Online System.

Massachusetts caregivers may not:

  • sell or divert the patient's marijuana
  • grow cannabis for a patient that doesn't have a Hardship Cultivation Registration
  • sell the cannabis they cultivate to the patient or others (it must be provided without compensation)
  • consume their patient's cannabis
  • allow patients under 18 years old to possess cannabis when not in the caregiver's presence
  • serve as a caregiver for more than five patients at a time

There is no fee to become a caregiver in Massachusetts.

Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

  • Qualifying Massachusetts residents must first be diagnosed with a qualifying condition. All patients must be evaluated by a state-licensed physician and be 18 or older or a minor with an adult caregiver. Qualifying patients also must have proof of residency. Probationers and parolees may be able to use medical marijuana if the conditions of their release allow for it.

  • Per Massachusetts state law, applicants and renewing patients must have one of the following debilitating medical conditions:

    • Cancer
    • Glaucoma
    • Positive status for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
    • Hepatitis C
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
    • Crohn’s Disease
    • Parkinson’s disease
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
    • Diseases and conditions determined to be debilitating, per the applicant’s healthcare provider
  • You might if you have a debilitating condition. It will be the practitioner's responsibility to determine whether your condition qualifies as "debilitating." The state defines “debilitating” as “causing weakness, cachexia, wasting syndrome, intractable pain, or nausea, or impairing strength or ability, and progressing to such an extent that one or more of a patient’s major life activities is substantially limited.”

  • Medical marijuana patients in Massachusetts benefit from a 17% to 20% tax savings, guaranteed product availability, access to cannabis in states that offer reciprocity, and a practitioner-guided treatment plan tailored to their needs.

  • Getting a Massachusetts MMJ evaluation with NuggMD is very affordable, and there's no risk because patients who don't qualify for the program will get their recommendation for free!

  • Not usually. Marijuana is still a Federal Schedule 1 drug, so most insurance companies won't pay for it for fear of prosecution. This may change when cannabis is rescheduled.

  • Your physician will upload your approval into the state's registration system within 24 to 48 hours. Massachusetts allows patients to print a temporary medical marijuana card as soon as they're approved, but the state's approval time varies wildly. Some patients have been approved as quickly as the following day, but the state website says it can take up to 60 days to process an application. That's why it's good to start the process as soon as possible.

  • With NuggMD, you are only charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before your certification has been submitted to the state. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. Patients won't receive a refund for failure to follow through with their certification process once the practitioner completes the certification requirements. It is the patient's responsibility to complete their certification. If you're stuck or having trouble completing your certification, please reach out to customer service and our agents will help you through the process. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

  • Absolutely! You have the right to see whomever you choose for your medical marijuana evaluation, so long as the practitioner is a Massachusetts-licensed physician, physician assistant, or certified nurse practitioner that has registered with the state as a Certifying Healthcare Provider. All NuggMD practitioners are licensed in the state for which they provide evaluations and have acquired all state-required cannabis training and certifications.

  • This depends on the state to which you're traveling. Each state has different rules regarding reciprocity, and some don't allow it at all. Check with your destination state to learn more.

  • No. You must have a Massachusetts state ID, driver's license, or a passport or military ID that proves your Massachusetts residency. Furthermore, the address on your ID must match the address on your application. If not, the application will be sent back to you for further clarification.
